The Weekly Drugstore Makeup Sales: Black Friday Edition

For a list of Black Friday sales for retailers such as Target, Ulta, Sephora, Kmart, Sears and more, click here.

PLEASE READ: This week's sales are a little bit different. CVS is having a 4-day-sale (11/20 - 11/23) followed by a separate Black Friday Sale (11/24 - 11/26). Rite Aid and Walgreens are running regular week-long sales (11/20 - 11/26) and also Black Friday Sales (11/24 - 11/26). BUT, Walgreens is also running a 4-day-only sale (11/20 - 11/23) but there are no beauty-related products on sale (I did list a good candle sale though, below). I've tried to make everything as clear as possible so that there's no confusion about which sales are happening on which dates.

I highly recommend checking out the Black Friday sales (links below) if you haven't already, as there are some fantastic deals going on this week at all three drugstores.

Review: Yes To Carrots Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF15

Believe it or not, I think this is my FIRST Yes To product I have ever owned. I've seen Yes To products around the drugstores, Target, etc. for years and have always wanted to try them, but for some reason I just never have--until now. I actually ran out of daytime moisturizer last month (not strange for most people, but given the amount of products I'm testing at any given moment, it caught me off guard to have NOTHING in my home to use during the day). So instead of repurchasing one of my go-to daytime moisturizers, I decided to buy something new.

Spotted: New Kiss Nail Dresses and Brow and Lash Serums

Last week, the lovely Mimi of Makeup Withdrawal sent me a tweet about the new Kiss Nail Dress collection. I knew that Broadway Nails (sister brand of Kiss) came out with Nail Dresses almost exactly one year ago to date (click here to see my tutorial/review) but Mimi said these were different, and that some of them had different designs for each nail. Well I was absolutely intrigued and started my drugstore search for them, to no avail.

But then this week reader Melissa spotted the display at her local Duane Reade (they're also popping up at Walgreens according to some of you) and was kind enough to share.  Thanks so much, Melissa!

Classic Drugstore Beauty Products Revisited: Noxzema Deep Cleansing Cream

I'd like to thank so many of you for taking the time to let me know your thoughts about this new series. I was overwhelmed with the amount of feedback I received and I'm so glad that the majority of you are up for something like this! If you missed my original post, this series is all about returning to the classics and seeing if they still live up to today's standards.

For my first post, I thought I'd take a look at a classic facial cleanser that's been around since 1914:

Swatches: OPI Warm & Fozzie from the Muppets Collection

When I finally got a chance to see the OPI Muppets Collection at a local beauty supply store recently, my wallet thanked me for the fact that just ONE polish found its way into my basket. Don't get me wrong: I love all the pretty glitters in this collection, but I guess with the Wet n Wild and Sally Hansen glitter collections, I'm not really feeling like I need another glitter at this point.

The one shade I purchased in this collection was Warm & Fozzie. Who doesn't love Fozzie Bear, right? After wearing this polish for a few days now, I have to say that this polish does a neat job of capturing the look and feel of Fozzie's fur in polish form.

Described as a metallic copper, I detect beautiful, rich brown, mocha, golden and bronze tones in this polish as well. There are rust and pink particles that become visible in certain lights, which I think gives this polish a weak duochrome effect. Also, at the outer edges of this polish, there is a wonderful mossy green that sometimes appears (much like the green in Orly Space Cadet). I love that this polish looks like a warm brown in certain lights and a cool brown in others. If you're a brown polish fan, I'd say this is a must-have.

The following photos were taken after three coats of polish, but I think you could get away with two coats if you were careful during application:

The Return of Mr. G! His review of the new Suave Styling Paste and Pomade for Men

I often get asked if Mr. G will return to this blog (he's reviewed various men's products in the past with often comical results). For the past few weeks, he's been working furiously on this review of some of the new hair products for men that were recently sent to me from Suave. (In fact, I haven't seen him work this hard on something since he wrote his thesis for grad school. I'm kidding of course, but he did spend a lot of time on this!)

Today I'd like to proudly announce that Mr. G is back, and if you liked his past reviews, I don't think he'll disappoint you this time around!

For those of you new to the reviews of Mr. G, he's my longtime boyfriend and in addition to being my guinea pig for various men's grooming products, he's also a college professor. For the purposes of this review, let me tell you a little bit about his hair: he is caucasian and his hair is fine in texture but it's of medium thickness. His hair is short (which you'll soon read about) and it has a tendency to get oily within a day of washing it. It's not color-treated and he NEVER uses heat styling.

Take it away, Mr. G!

The Wednesday Question (special year-end edition: please read!)

As 2011 draws to a close, it's time again for me to start compiling the winners of my annual Cheapie Awards. Last year I added a new award that's entirely dependent on YOU, and I'd like to continue that tradition again this year.

I will be including a category in the Cheapie Awards for Reader's Choice for Best New Drugstore Beauty Product of 2011, but I need your help in order to make this possible. Instead of picking the nominees myself, I want YOU to determine them. Here's how it works:
  • On this post, leave a comment telling me what you think is BEST new drugstore product released in 2011. It can be any type of CORE COLLECTION product (no limited edition products, please). It can be a makeup product, haircare product, skincare product, body care product; it doesn't matter. It just has to have been released in 2011 as part of the brand's core collection and available at drugstores.
  • After one week, I'll take the most popular products mentioned in the comments and then narrow it down to a short list. Then I'll take that short list and create a reader poll on the right-hand sidebar, where I'll give you one month to vote for a winner.

A HUGE thank you in advance for leaving a comment on this post. The Reader's Choice for Best New Drugstore Beauty Product of 2011 is entirely dependent on YOU, so please let your voice be heard and leave a comment on this post!

PS: If you're not sure if a product you'd like to nominate was released in 2011, leave your comment anyway and I'll verify the release date for you before I compile the short list.

I cannot thank you all enough for your help!

If you're a new or occasional reader of this blog, you might have missed these so I hope you find this helpful!

The ranking of the following posts was determined based on the number of page hits received between Jan. 1st 2011 and November 14th 2011. Some of these reviews may have been written in 2010 or 2009, however they have received the most page hits in 2011.

Review: As Seen On TV Salon Express Nail Art Stamping Kit (pic heavy)

NOTE: Before purchasing this kit at my local Rite Aid, I was a nail stamping virgin. I don't own the Konad or any faux-nads, etc. and I've always been intimidated by the entire process. So this review is from the perspective of a complete newbie. If you already have experience with nail stamping, your opinion of this kit could be quite different from mine.

I have never posted a review of a product after owning it for less than 24 hours, but I'm breaking my own rules here today! After Caitlin shared the news that there is now a DRUGSTORE nail stamping kit available at Rite Aid for $9.99 (according to some of you this kit is also available at Sally Beauty and CVS but perhaps with different plates), I pretty much jumped in my car and raced to my Rite Aid last night to get it. In retrospect, I'm glad I rushed to get it because it was the last one left in the As Seen On TV aisle!

The retail price of this kit is like almost all other As Seen On TV products: $9.99. But because I'm a Rite Aid Wellness+ Gold Member, I got it for $8 (yay!).

I need your feedback (lurkers, please de-lurk!)

Dear longtime readers, new readers, occasional readers and lurkers,

I would absolutely love to receive your feedback today (please do not reply via Facebook and Twitter--I'd like to keep all comments in one handy location, i.e., this post).

I'm thinking about doing a new series on this blog where I'll review classic drugstore beauty products. When I say "classic" I mean those iconic drugstore products that always seem to make Top-10 Lists every year. Examples would be: Cetaphil cleanser, the original Maybelline Great Lash mascara, Elnett hairspray, etc.

The reason why I'm asking if you'd be interested in this series is simple: since these are time-honored products that millions of people already love, there are already thousands of reviews online for you to read. I'm not sure I can bring anything new to the table, other than my own, original opinion of each product.

So my question is this: would you like me to test and review some classic drugstore beauty products, or are you tired of hearing about them at this point?

Thank you in advance for your comments--I rarely ask for feedback like this, but since this would be a major project, I'd like to know from you if it's even worth beginning.

    Love,
    G. xo

New Sephora JC Penney coupon and a drugstore nail stamper kit for $9.99?

    • A nail stamper kit with five plates (Konad dupes) for just ten bucks at Rite Aid? YEP! Apparently this kit, called "Salon Express", is popping up in the As Seen On TV section of Rite Aid stores and you can get all the details (with great pics) here. A huge thanks to Caitlin of Something Creative for this one! I am SO finding (and buying) this.
    • Thanks to reader flagrl561 for the heads up about this one: now through 11/29, print this coupon, take it to your local Sephora inside JC Penney and snag a deluxe sample of NARS Pro-Time Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base with any Express Service at the Beauty Studio. I haven't visited a JC Penney Beauty Studio for services before, but I'm assuming the Express Services are less expensive than the regular services?
    • One more tidbit: reader lisa.maria recently spotted a new Conair version of the Clarisonic at her local CVS. Has anyone spotted or tried this out yet? Also, has anyone tried the Olay version? Thoughts?
